Keeping clients engaged via podcasts - Part 1

Written by Brian Duckett

Brainstorming on how to position a podcast into my web design and development service that would keep my clients engaged with my service once the project is complete, as well as attract my ideal client. I said to myself... "Hey Brian, this may be a good idea."

Podcasting Ideas

I attain permission from my clients either at the beginning of a project or during the course of one, to be added to my newsletter mailing list. Other than the 90 days of free support that I offer with any completed project, this is usually our only communication once the website is live. I complete each project with the normal search engine submissions, dmoz registration, local engine submission, and statistics and reporting configuration, but how do I keep them engaged after the project is done?

One solution to these two challenges, would be to position the podcast as a promotional item for my clients. I'm thinking a 25 minute interview that will allow for my clients to showcase their product. This in turn will help to drive traffic to their service or product from any podcast subscribers, as well as add a personal touch to their newly developed website.

A client interview to wrap up the project... great, what's next?

Research:

Using this approach, research would be kept to a minimum, due to having already built the website.

  • Collect all of my notes from the project.
  • Re-read the website calls to action. (again for the 100th time)
  • Re-visit the competition.
  • Review notes, emails, stickies, text messages, etc. from the project.

Open Ended Questions:

Once this information is reviewed I'll want to put together a list of questions to ask.

  • Brainstorm out about 25 questions
  • Wait a day or so and cut this list to 20
  • Another day... cut another 5 questions
  • One last day... cut the final 5 questions

Now I have 10 great open ended questions, which will allow for my client to elaborate on each for approximately 2 minutes each. This will allow for me to introduce the show for 2.5 min in the beginning, as well as wrap everything up at the end, while still keeping to my 25 minute showtime. It really should be that easy. Check out part 2, where I brainstorm on how to get the client to buy in to the idea.
