Manually Recovering your Joomla! Admin Password

Written by Brian Duckett

Quick Fix Guide

Multiple Instances CMS

This quick fix guide will walk you through simple steps to recover your Joomla!TM administrator password. If you are locked out of your administrator as a super-admin and there is only one super-admin account for your website, this guide will help you reset your password in less than 5 minutes.

Recently, I came across an issue where the super-admin gid was incorrect. In these cases skip the password reset and simply change the super-admin’s gid field to ‘25’ (Joomla 1.5).

Process List

  1. Login to your cPanel and locate phpMyAdmin
  2. Once you have located the database the Joomla! CMS is currently using, click the #_users table
  3. Click Browse to display individual records
  4. Click the ‘Edit’ icon next to the entry you would like to modify
  5. In the password field, change the function in the drop-down list to ‘MD5’
  6. Select and Delete the value and replace with a temporary password: for example ‘123456’
  7. Save by clicking the ‘Go’ button
  8. Login to the administrator using this temporary password
  9. Immediately change the temporary password in the user manager to reset the salted MD5 encryption

That's it!
