There are a lot of changes coming to revision-technology.com in the not too distant future. Unfortunately I cannot share them with you in the newsletter because it's secret, but what I will share is when they will be available. Positioning your website for results!

Traditional vs. Web Marketing

As we look forward into the future of business, Internet marketing is progressing because of the effectiveness and demand from on-line marketers all over the world. Internet marketing is defined as: the use of the Internet to advertise goods and services. It includes pay per click advertising, banner ads, e-mail marketing, affiliate marketing, interactive advertising, search engine marketing (including search engine optimization) and blog marketing.

Unlike traditional approaches to marketing, such as print, radio and TV advertisement, Internet marketing is a much more economical method to use. Why? In Internet marketing it is not only about providing information about the products and services that a company is offering. It can also serve as a tool for consumers to purchase a product or service on-line anytime they want (Can anyone say Impulse Buying).

The Internet is literally a network of millions of computers (i.e. servers). These servers are filled with vast amounts of information. It is estimated that there are well over 10 trillion pages (10,000,000,000,000) and millions of new pages added every day. Early on, it was recognized that this vast amount of information had to be organized in some logical fashion in order for it to be useful. Consequently, indexes evolved forming simple structures based on subject. Further refinement of indexed pages within individual subjects still represented an overwhelming amount of information. This led to the development of the search engine.

Therefore, this vast amount of information on the Internet is just sitting there waiting to be 'served' to whoever asks. Here lies the major distinction between traditional and Internet marketing: the information is not served unless asked by the user.

Traditional marketing uses demographics to narrow a large population down to a targeted potential user. Internet marketing is the opposite due to the targeted user searching for a specific item or piece of content. Thus, the strategy of Internet marketing is very different.

Frequently, professionals view Internet Marketing as the dark, mysterious tunnel that goes on for miles. Some see a light at the end of the tunnel, while others see no end in sight. Without the perceived "in-your-face" connection, professionals are hesitant to invest in the Internet. "How will our small company get listed on a search engine that already has millions of results?" "Will our target market even see our pay-per-click advertisements?" "How can our website bring more business into our store?" These questions reflect the views professionals, unfamiliar with the benefits of Internet marketing, have toward this form of promotion.

The objective of all marketing methods is to accomplish one or more of the following goals:

  1. Awareness: Associate your company with the products or services the company provides.
  2. Informational | Educational Educate customers on features, advantages, benefits and specifications of your offering.
  3. Branding: Make the market aware of the company's brand and identity.
  4. Leads | Sales The consumer responds to a specific call-to-action, i.e. a consumer takes advantage of a web-only sale, requests a demo etc.

Lastly, firms need to adopt a transitional strategy that protects their investment in traditional marketing, direct marketing and media, while leveraging it to take full advantage of Internet marketing. A success implementation of an Internet marketing plan will reduce costs of your marketing plan, and improve generally improve the results of your marketing efforts.
