8 Steps to Perfect Joomla Read More Links

Read More Blog formatting a section or category of articles in JoomlaTM is an easy way to display multiple articles on the same page. The J! CMS provides parameters that allow you to choose how these content items will be shown. When your site viewers are visiting a page in the category blog format they will expect to see certain blog characteristics. One of which will be a headline explaining what the content is about.

A good way to make good use of these titles is to change the menu parameters to make the title link to the rest of the content. For SEO this is great technique to ensure that the search engine robots understand what the information on the next page should be about.

From a users standpoint, they will most likely expect for the title to link and click there first anyway. Make sure that the title being linked is easily identifiable to your site visitors. If not already there, add some CSS to your template so that the links change color, are underlined, and the cursor changes to a pointer when hovering the title link. We offer assistance with these types of tasks via our Website Support Package.

Next set the parameters for the teaser text that generates more interest in the article. The search engines like to see the text base of your content anywhere from 300 - 500 words. The intro text should be around 150 words. Setting the text to a specific amount of words not only looks better on the front end but allows you to capture the readers attention without spilling the beans.

By default you can display a Joomla read more link when editing an article and pressing the "Read More..." button below the editor. This will in turn add a text link of "read more" to your article in the place where the code was added. You are now competing with 377,000,000+ websites for that term.

Not what you want? You can change the default for each article specifically by entering the text for your read more link in the “Alternative Read More” field. This field is located under the Advanced Parameters when editing an article.

Improve your site SEO using the Joomla read more links, in eight easy steps:

  1. Conduct your keyword research
  2. Make a list of the keywords relevant to the article
  3. Analyze your keyword stats
  4. Choose 3 - 5 Keywords for your text
  5. Search for these keywords in Google
  6. Search for these keywords in quotes “   ” in Google
  7. Make sure the search without quotes results in many paid advertisers.
  8. Make sure the search with quotes returns fewer than 5,000 results.

Finally if you'd like to link the reader past the intro text, add an i.d. to the anchor text to move the reader along to the rest of the article.

That's it you're all set!
