Uniform Resource Identifier
A URI file stands for Uniform Resource Identifiers. This is a global identifier that can be accessed remotely. A URL is a form of URI. An URI doesn't necessarily refer to just a remote resource. It is also a compact string of characters that identify a resource in the internet, and enables interactions with different representations over a network using specific protocols. These are defined in schemes with specific syntax and associated protocols. It can be classified as both a URL and a URN. Both terms are complimentary.
Let's talk about how URI syntax works. There is a scheme name such as HTTP, followed by a colon then scheme specific part. The semantics of the part are determined by the specifications that govern each of the schemes. The URI forces the scheme to adhere to a generic syntax which reserves certain characters for special purposes without saying always what they are. It also forces restrictions to the scheme specific part to provide a degree of consistency when it has a hierarchical structure. Both URI and URL have a shared history. There have been many refinements over the years to each.
RSS Explained
What is RSS?
RSS means Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are an easy and efficient way to receive notification when new information is available in a specific area of interest.
How Can I Benefit From RSS?
RSS feeds save time, allowing users to receive notification only when new content is available. Web site visitors choose the information they wish to subscribe to and can unsubscribe from any feed at any point.
How Do I Subscribe to RSS Feeds?
RSS readers are used to display the contents of an RSS feed in an easy to read format. Once you have an RSS reader you simply click the icon or a link to the RSS feed and paste it into your RSS reader. Some readers will auto detect the presence of an RSS feed on a website and you can optionally choose to subscribe. A short list is available at http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-software.html
You want your indexed pages based on quality and not quantity
Optimized content for your industry or topic is a great resource for your online presence. Once indexed these articles, and/or posts will begin to climb up the search engine rankings, and soon you'll begin to see inbound traffic from those searching for what you're writing about. Simply put, that's pretty much the way it goes. Of course there are systematic techniques to getting to the top of the engine rankings for specific keywords, but this post is actually about keeping information out of the search engines.
When utilizing a CMS, such as Wordpress or Joomla to publish this content there are inevitably certain files and directories that you will not want indexed by the search engines. For instance Joomla has an administrator directory or the Wordpress wp-admin directory that store the files needed for your CMS to function correctly.
Microsoft Sharedview
Offering online support can be a tricky subject in terms of web based collaboration. Website support has many different delivery points. They can include a walk through of your completed website, access to a member only support forum and a wiki. Each of these serve a specific purpose and are administered differently.
For instance we administer a website walk through via remote desktop. This allows us to best capture a personable setting for the demonstration.
When conducting these demonstrations we collaborate via Microsoft SharedView. This free, lightweight tool serves this purpose well and only requires a Windows Live ID to begin the collaboration session.
To begin the setup process:
- Download the application and install it on your computer
- From your desktop use the "Start" or Windows icon to locate the application. Double click the Microsoft SharedView icon to open it
- Next: Sign in with your Windows Live ID
- Once signed in: Choose Start Session if you are the presenter and Join Session or the link in your invitation to enter an existing session
When presenting, you'll begin with the toolbar showing 1 participant.

Clicking the participant button will open a box of options to invite others, distribute handouts for the demonstration, or chat with the participants.
